The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Travis County will present its 2018 “last chance” continuing education unit program Feb. 23.
A total of 10 units will be offered that day through two five-hour blocks, each with its own registration. Both will offer five continuing education units – one laws and regulations, one integrated pest management and three general.
Both program blocks will be offered at the Travis County East Service Center, 6011 Blue Bluff Road, Austin.
“This program will offer Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units to those people needing them to maintain their commercial, non-commercial or private applicator license,” said Daphne Richards, AgriLife Extension horticulturist, Travis County.
The registration fee for each block is $60 by Feb. 16 and $75 after, including on-site. Cost includes coffee, snacks, lunch and beverages. To register, go here, and find the 2018 Pesticide Applicator Program Feb. 23 in Austin on the schedule.
Program 1 will be from 8 a.m.-1:45 p.m. with registration at 7:30 a.m. and lunch at 1:15 p.m.
“The first hour of Program 1 will be the new mandatory training for anyone wishing to apply herbicides containing auxins, which will have its own CEU certificate,” Richards said. “The training qualifies as one CEU in laws and regulations. Those wishing to participate in only this can make special arrangements to do so.”

Program 1 also includes sessions on ant identification, biology and management; stinging and biting arthropods; identifying tree hazards and problems; and weed management strategies.
Program 2 will begin with registration and lunch at 1:15 p.m. followed by the training from 1:45-7:15 p.m.
Program 2 includes sessions on strategies for weed management; pesticide classifications and laws; using pesticides safely to avoid runoff; brush control and leaf-spraying options; and understanding and controlling invasive species.
“This program will be a good way to obtain a lot of continuing education units in a concentrated time frame,” Richards said.
She said an additional five CEUs will be available through instruction on the Last Chance DVD set, if necessary.
