The Coleman County Field Crops Program and Field Tour is set for May 12 in Coleman.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program will be in the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 500 W. Live Oak St. in Coleman. The day starts with registration at 8 a.m. followed by the indoor program from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The field tour is scheduled from 1:15-2:30 p.m. at the Cecil Johnson Farm, 1.5 miles west of Santa Anna on U.S. Highway 67.
“We’ve had ample moisture this year and for the most part our small-grain crops look good,” said Michael Palmer, AgriLife Extension agent in Coleman County. “But ample moisture leads to added weed and insect pressure and we are having our share of both now, so much of our program will deal with those two issues.”

Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered.
Topics and speakers will include:
- Small-grain varieties and weed control timing, Corn 101 and Canola Update, Dr. Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomist, Lubbock.
- Agriculture policy and crop market outlook, Bill Thompson, AgriLife Extension economist, San Angelo.
- Integrated pest management update – insect and weed control, Dr. Allen Knutson, AgriLife Extension entomologist, Dallas.
- U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency updates, Curtis Garrett, USDA Farm Service Agency county executive director, Coleman.
Following the noon meal, the program will convene to the Johnson Farm for a review of wheat varieties and accompanying field tour.
