    Kansas: Corn Harvest Enters Home Stretch – USDA

    Crop Progress and Condition for the Week Ending October 25, 2015.

    For the week ending October 25, 2015, temperatures four to ten degrees above normal were experienced, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The western half of the State received up to three inches of rain, while the east remained mostly dry. There were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 14 percent very short, 38 short, 46 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 13 percent very short, 36 short, 51 adequate, and 0 surplus.

    Field Crops Report: Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 13 poor, 44 fair, 36 good, and 5 excellent. Winter wheat planted was 91 percent, ahead of 86 last year, but equal to the five-year average. Emerged was 67 percent, near 70 both last year and average.

    Corn harvested was 91 percent, ahead of 76 last year and 86 average.

    Soybeans condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 33 fair, 47 good, and 10 excellent. Soybeans dropping
    leaves was 97 percent, near 98 both last year and average. Harvested was 70 percent, well ahead of 49 last year, but near 69 average.

    Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 poor, 28 fair, 53 good, and 10 excellent. Sorghum mature was 96 percent, ahead of 88 last year and 91 average. Harvested was 66 percent, well ahead of 36 last year, and ahead of 50 average.

    Sunflowers condition rated 1 very poor, 3 poor, 31 fair, 57 good, and 8 excellent. Sunflowers bracts turning yellow was 95 percent, ahead of 89 last year, but near 96 average. Bracts turning brown was 81 percent, near 79 last year, but behind 88 average. Harvested was 40 percent, ahead of 23 last year, but near 41 average.

    Alfalfa fourth cutting was 95 percent, near 91 last year, but ahead of 88 average.

    Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 11 poor, 26 fair, 51 good, and 11 excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 77 percent, behind 86 last year and 91 average. Harvested was 13 percent, ahead of 5 last year, but near 11 average.

    Livestock, Pasture and Range Conditions: Pasture and range condition rated 5 very poor, 14 poor, 38 fair, 38 good, and 5 excellent.

    Stock water supplies rated 5 percent very short, 17 short, 77 adequate, and 1 surplus.
