For the week ending October 11, 2015, temperatures averaged two to eight degrees above normal, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The southern half of the State received less than half of an inch of rain, while the north remained dry.. There were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 14 percent very short, 39 short, 45 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 12 percent very short, 35 short, 53 adequate, and 0 surplus.
Field Crops Report: Winter wheat planted was 69 percent, near 65 last year and 70 for the five-year average. Emerged was 34 percent, behind 40 last year, but near 38 average.
Corn harvested was 76 percent, well ahead of 55 last year and ahead of 68 average.
Soybeans condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 34 fair, 47 good, and 9 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 83 percent, ahead of 77 last year, but equal to the average. Harvested was 31 percent, ahead of 17 last year, but behind 36 average.
Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 poor, 29 fair, 53 good, and 9 excellent. Sorghum mature was 85 percent, well ahead of 63 last year and ahead of 66 average. Harvested was 37 percent, well ahead of 14 last year and ahead of 24 average.
Sunflowers condition rated 1 very poor, 3 poor, 31 fair, 57 good, and 8 excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dried was 96 percent, ahead of 91 last year, but near 94 average. Bracts turning yellow was 77 percent, near 81 last year, but behind 86 average. Bracts turning brown was 49 percent, behind 54 last year and 67 average. Harvested was 5 percent, near 6 last year, but behind 18 average.
Alfalfa fourth cutting was 90 percent, ahead of 83 last year and 80 average.
Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 11 poor, 26 fair, 51 good, and 11 excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 60 percent, near 64 last year, but behind 77 average. Harvested was 8 percent, ahead of 1 last year and 3 average.
