For the week ending August 9, 2015, hot and dry weather over much of the State caused small grains to mature rapidly and provided for good harvest conditions, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
However, there were areas where row crops were starting to show signs of stress. Good precipitation was received in some isolated areas of the east and many areas in the west. There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 23 short, 67 adequate, and 8 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 18 short, 75 adequate, and 6 surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 7 poor, 30 fair, 53 good, and 9 excellent. Winter wheat mature was 90 percent, well ahead of 41 last year. Harvested was 24 percent, well ahead of 3 last year.
Durum wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 16 fair, 64 good, and 19 excellent. Durum wheat coloring was 80 percent, well ahead of 45 last year and the five-year average of 49. Mature was 29 percent, well ahead of 3 last year. Harvested was 1 percent.
Spring wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 17 fair, 63 good, and 18 excellent. Spring wheat coloring was 95 percent, well ahead of 69 last year and 74 average. Mature was 66 percent, well ahead of 19 last year. Harvested was 16 percent, ahead of 0 last year, but near 17 average.
Barley condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 18 fair, 67 good, and 13 excellent. Barley coloring was 98 percent, ahead of 83 both last year and the average. Mature was 82 percent, well ahead of 33 last year. Harvested was 29 percent, well ahead of 2 last year, and ahead of 22 average.
Oats condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 14 fair, 66 good, and 15 excellent. Oats coloring was 97 percent, well ahead of 72 last year, and ahead of 78 average. Mature was 74 percent, well ahead of 27 last year. Harvested was 20 percent, ahead of 3 last year, but near 21 average.
Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 17 fair, 62 good, and 15 excellent. Corn silking was 94 percent, ahead of 82 last year, but near 91 average. Dough was 24 percent, ahead of 11 last year, but near 26 average. Dented was 1 percent, near 0 last year and 2 average.
Soybean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 16 fair, 65 good, and 15 excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 86 percent, ahead of 72 last year and 78 average. Dropping leaves was 1 percent, near 0 both last year and the average.
