    Kansas: Crops Continue in Mostly Good Condition – USDA

    Crop Progress and Condition for the Week Ending August 9, 2015.

    For the week ending August 9, 2015, the north central part of the State received three or more inches of rain, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The remainer of the State received half an inch or more of precipitation and experienced near normal temperatures. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 3 percent very short, 19 short, 72 adequate, and 6 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 6 percent very short, 20 short, 71 adequate, and 3 surplus.

    Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 3 percent very poor, 7 poor, 31 fair, 49 good, and 10 excellent. Corn silking was at 96 percent, near 97 last year and for the five-year average. Dough was at 60 percent, near 64 last year, but behind 67 average. Dented was 14 percent, near 10 last year, but behind 25 average.

    Soybeans condition rated 1 percent very poor, 8 poor, 39 fair, 47 good, and 5 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 75 percent, behind 82 last year and 81 average. Setting pods was 45 percent, behind 50 last year, but near 41 average.

    Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 27 fair, 61 good, and 7 excellent. Sorghum headed was 60 percent, ahead of 41 last year and 48 average. Sorghum coloring was 5 percent, near 4 last year, but equal to the average.

    Sunflowers condition rated 1 very poor, 2 poor, 28 fair, 60 good, and 9 excellent. Sunflowers blooming was 32 percent, behind 42 last year and 51 average.

    Alfalfa hay conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 33 fair, 55 good, and 5 excellent. Alfalfa third cutting was 72 percent, ahead of 57 last year and 63 average. Fourth cutting was 8 percent.

    Cotton condition rated 0 percent very poor, 10 poor, 28 fair, 52 good, and 10 excellent. Cotton emerged was 95 percent. Squaring was 83 percent, ahead of 72 last year, but behind 88 average. Setting bolls was 42 percent, ahead of 26 last year, but behind 48 average.

    Livestock, Pasture and Range Conditions: Pasture and range condition rated 2 very poor, 6 poor, 30 fair, 52 good, and 10 excellent.

    Stock water supplies rated 2 percent very short, 8 short, 87 adequate, and 3 surplus.
