    South Carolina: Question of the Week – Spoon and Tendril

    Last week the question was:  How can you tell if this watermelon is ripe?

    At the tip of my lower index finger is a leaf known as the spoon.  At the tip of my upper index finger is the tendril.  These are both found at the point where the watermelon stem meets the vine.  To tell if a watermelon is ripe, find the spoon and tendril and if they are both dried and shriveled up, its ready to pick.  The spoon will dry up first and can be difficult to locate by the time the tendril is dried.  Since both are still green on this watermelon, we need to leave it in the field.  This method is far more accurate than thumping.
