Pennsylvania Corn: Acuron Available for Broadleaf Weed Control

There are new tools and new challenges for crop managers to be aware of this spring. Growers might anticipate reduced performance of their pre-emergent weed control programs if an activating rainfall is lacking and how they might plan forward.

EPA approved Acuron herbicide for use in corn and a number of states have followed suit. Acuron from Syngenta includes four active ingredients including the new herbicide bicyclopyrone, a group 27 or HPPD inhibitor. Additional active ingredients include mesotrione, s-metolachlor, and atrazine (Group 27, 15, and 5). Bicyclopyrone has similar properties to mesotrione, but adds additional broadleaf and grass activity including the ragweeds, pigweeds, and annual morningglories.

Acuron can be applied up to 28 days prior to corn planting and POST up to 12-inch tall corn. The 2.5 qt per acre rate provides 0.625 lb atrazine, 1.33 lb s-metolachlor, 0.150 lb mesotrione, and 0.0375 lb bicyclopyrone. Acuron is available in 2015 for a limited launch.
