Peanut Stocks and Processing: Utilization Up 4%, Stocks at 1.4B Pounds

    Peanut stocks reported in commercial storage on August 31, 2014 totaled 1.43 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared with 2.43 billion pounds a year ago. This total includes 662 million pounds of actual farmer stock.

    Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 702 million pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 62.8 million pounds.

    Shelled peanut stocks totaled 528 million pounds of which 509 million pounds were edible grades and 19.1 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 61.7 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 423 million pounds of Runners, and 24.0 million pounds of Spanish.

    Millings in August totaled 407 million pounds. Millings by type were 60.9 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 345 million pounds of Runners, and 1.44 million pounds of Spanish.

    Commercial processors utilized 183 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during August. Utilization by type was 112 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 32.1 million pounds for peanut candy, and 35.9 million pounds for peanut snacks. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 46.3 million pounds during the month.

    Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2.61 million pounds of peanut during August.

    Stocks of treated seed on hand August 31, 2014 totaled 376,000 pounds, compared with 3.27 million pounds on July 31, 2014. Of the August total, 112,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 238,000 pounds were Runners, and 26,000 thousand pounds were Spanish. July stocks of treated seed included 1.62 million pounds of Runners.
