    Kansas: Corn Harvest at 26 Percent, Behind Average — USDA

    Crop Progress and Condition for the Week Ending Sept. 21, 2014

    Rain showers were limited mostly to the eastern third of Kansas, with average temperatures above normal across most of State, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

    There were 6.0 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture rated 8 percent very short, 26 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 16 percent very short, 31 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

    Field Crops Report

    Winter wheat planted was at 15 percent near 12 last year and the five-year average of 13. Winter wheat emerged was 3 percent, equal to last year and near 2 average.

    Corn conditions rated 6 percent very poor, 10 poor, 29 fair, 41 good, and 14 excellent. Corn dented was 94 percent, near 95 last year and 98 average. Corn mature was 60 percent, ahead of 49 last year, but behind 73 average. Corn harvested was 26 percent, ahead of 15 last year, but behind 33 average.

    Sorghum conditions rated 4 percent very poor, 10 poor, 32 fair, 45 good, and 9 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 82 percent, near 83 last year and 80 average. Sorghum mature was 23 percent, ahead of 14 last year, but near 21 average. Sorghum harvested was 3 percent, near 1 last year and 4 average.

    Soybean conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 10 poor, 35 fair, 42 good, and 10 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 38 percent, near 40 last year and 41 average.

    Sunflower conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 7 poor, 32 fair, 52 good, and 6 excellent. Ray flowers dried was 68 percent, behind 80 last year and 78 average. Sunflowers turning yellow was 44 percent, behind 58 last year and 56 average. Sunflowers turning brown was 9 percent, behind 25 last year and average at 21.

    Cotton conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 34 fair, 56 good, and 4 excellent. Cotton setting bolls was 93 percent, equal to last year, but behind 99 average. Cotton bolls opening was 31 percent, near 27 last year, Alfalfa hay conditions rated 4 percent very poor, 11 poor, 40 fair, 38 good, and 7 excellent. Alfalfa hay fourth cutting was 59 percent complete, ahead of 48 last year, but near 55 average.

    Livestock, Pasture and Range Report

    Pasture and range conditions rated 7 percent very poor, 16 poor, Stock water supplies rated 7 percent very short, 19 short, 73 adequate, and 1 surplus.
