    South Dakota: Spring Wheat Harvest Wrapping Up – USDA

    Crop Progress and Condition for the Week Ending September 14, 2014.

    For the week ending September 14, 2014, cool, wet weather dominated the weather pattern across most areas of the state, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Rain was reported statewide with heavier amounts in the south. Statewide, there were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 11 short, 85 adequate, and 3 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 13 short, 83 adequate, and 3 surplus.

    Field Crops Report: Winter wheat planted was 14 percent, equal to last year, but behind 19 for the five-year average.

    Spring wheat harvested was 94 percent, behind both 100 last year and average.

    Barley harvested was 95 percent, behind both 100 last year and average.

    Corn conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 19 fair, 58 good, and 16 excellent. Dented was 80 percent, near 82 last year and 81 average. Corn mature was 10 percent, behind 16 last year and 26 average.

    Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 19 fair, 60 good, and 16 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 28 percent, behind 44 last year and 56 average.

    Sorghum conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 13 fair, 78 good, and 7 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 80 percent, near 84 last year, but behind 90 average. Mature was 7 percent, near 11 last year, but behind 22 average.

    Sunflower conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 33 fair, 60 good, and 5 excellent. Ray flowers dried was at 59 percent, well behind 80 last year and 86 average. Bracts turning yellow was 28 percent, behind 34 last year and 57 average. Turning brown was 4 percent complete.

    Alfalfa hay conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 21 fair, 56 good, and 20 excellent. Third cutting was 58 percent complete, well behind 87 last year and 78 average. Fourth cutting was 3 percent.

    Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 24 fair, 58 good, and 12 excellent.

    Stock water supplies rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
