Crop Progress and Condition for the Week Ending August 17, 2014.
Much needed rain fell across the state, averaging 1.26 inches during the week ending August 17. Statewide, temperatures averaged 71.6 degrees for the week, which is 4.5 degrees below normal. There were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 6 percent very short, 23 percent short, 61 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 7 percent very short, 31 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.
Corn in the dough stage progressed to 91 percent. Corn dented progressed to 52 percent, up 18 percentage points from last week and 22 percentage points ahead of last year. Corn condition was rated 83 percent good to excellent. Soybeans blooming progressed to 90 percent. Soybeans setting pods progressed to 70 percent, 23 percentage points ahead of last year and 11 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 78 percent good to excellent.
Cotton setting bolls progressed to 87 percent. Rice headed progressed to 79 percent.
Pasture condition was rated 1 percent very poor, rated 15 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 37 percent good, and 6 percent excellent.
