    Kansas: Dry Conditions, Corn in Dough Stage – USDA

    For the week ending July 27, 2014, hot, dry conditions returned to Kansas, stressing crops in many areas according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Average temperatures were two to six degrees above normal across most of the State, with triple digit highs in many areas. Milder temperatures were limited to southeast Kansas. Only a few counties received more than a half inch of rainfall last week. There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 12 percent very short, 32 percent short, 53 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 16 percent very short, 32 percent short, 51 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.

    Field Crops Report: Corn conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 7 poor, 31 fair, 44 good, and 15 excellent. Corn silking was 86 percent, ahead of 76 last year, but equal to the five-year average. Corn in the dough stage was 36 percent, ahead of 20 last year and 32 average.

    Sorghum conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 32 fair, 52 good, and 10 excellent. Sorghum headed was 14 percent, near 11 last year, and 16 average.

    Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 34 fair, 50 good, and 11 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 60 percent, ahead of 51 last year, but near 61 average. Soybeans setting pods was 24 percent, ahead of 10 last year and 15 average.

    Sunflower conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 34 fair, 55 good, and 7 excellent. Sunflowers emerged was 95 percent, behind 100 last year and 98 average. Sunflowers blooming was 17 percent, near 15 last year and 21 average.

    Cotton conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 39 fair, 51 good, and 5 excellent. Cotton squaring was 54 percent, behind 69 last year and 82 average. Cotton setting bolls was at 8 percent, near 11 last year, but behind 22 average.

    Alfalfa hay conditions were 3 percent very poor, 10 poor, 37 fair, 42 good, and 8 excellent. Alfalfa hay second cutting was 94 percent complete, equal to last year, and near 98 average. Alfalfa hay third cutting was 29 percent complete, ahead of 15 last year, but behind 39 average.
