    South Dakota: Corn In Good Condition, Herbicide Spraying – USDA

    For the week ending June 22, 2014, wide spread rain showers and near normal temperatures continued to dominated the weather pattern across most areas of the state, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Activities included cutting and baling alfalfa hay, spraying herbicides, and moving cattle to summer pastures. Statewide, there were 3.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 4 short, 79 adequate, and 17 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 6 short, 86 adequate, and 8 surplus.

    Field Crops Report: Winter wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 29 fair, 62 good, and 5 excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 98 percent. Headed was 88 percent, ahead of 60 last year and the five- year average of 83. Winter wheat coloring was 1 percent.

    Spring wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 19 fair, 65 good, and 13 excellent. Spring wheat jointed was 74 percent. Headed was 29 percent, ahead of last year at 21 and, but behind 42 average.

    Oat conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 15 fair, 76 good, and 9 excellent. Oats headed was 53 percent, ahead of 28 last year and 44 average.

    Barley condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 22 fair, 65 good, and 13 excellent. Barley emerged was 95 percent, behind 100 last year and 100 average. Barley jointed was 42 percent. Headed was 12 percent, behind 37 last year and the average of 32.

    Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 1 poor, 17 fair, 71 good, and 10 excellent.

    Soybeans condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 20 fair, 67 good, and 9 excellent. Soybeans emerged was 92 percent, ahead of last year at 82 and 86 average. Soybeans blooming was 0 percent, equal to last year, but behind 2 average.

    Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 8 fair, 89 good, and 3 excellent. Sorghum was 90 percent planted, behind 96 last year and average of 95. Sorghum emerged was 66, ahead near 64 last year but behind 71 average.

    Sunflowers planted were 74 percent, behind 76 last year and 81 average. Sunflowers emerged was 39 percent.

    Alfalfa hay conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 24 fair, 57 good, and 17 excellent. 51 percent of alfalfa hay first cutting was complete, ahead of 39 last year, but behind 54 average.

    Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 13 fair, 64 good, and 22 excellent.

    Stock water supplies were 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus.
