Virginia Cotton: Best Time for Herbicides is Monday and Tuesday

The week is starting off with highs in the low 90s, then it’s gonna get hot by Wednesday. The lower humidity will keep the heat index down as well as the scorch risk from normal. Nevertheless, it will be hot as the dickens.

The best opportunity to apply Dual or Warrant this week to provide residual weed control without a high risk of scorching the cotton will be Monday and Tuesday.

Up till now, the scorch has been minimal. However, we are going to see the hottest week of the growing season this week so we will have to be pickier on when we spray and what exactly goes in the tank. Some farmers will likely make two trips over the field to minimize some of the leaf scorch that can be caused by some tank mix partners.

Topdressing cotton will be a primary chore for the next several weeks. There is quite a bit of flexibility and a wide window on when to apply the top dress Nitrogen. I would target 7 to 9 nodes for a single application guideline although there is no hard and fast rule.

Early planted cotton is ready now while cotton planted the last week of May will not have 7-9 leaves until July.
