After closing this week’s issue of AgFax Tree Crops, PCA Ron Hardy told us that he treated his first orchard this year for leaffooted plant bugs. The treatment was made last week in an orchard about 7 miles north of Madera. He said he has not found any bugs in other orchards.
This also was the first instance this season that we have heard a report of any leaffooted plant bug applications in almonds, although the insect has been found lately on a scattered basis in Kern County.
“We found three bugs fairly easily,” he said in an email. “This orchard was hit pretty hard last year. ven though we couldn’t find any bugs, we treated when we started seeing damage. So, we didn’t want to take any chances this year.”
