    Illinois: Wheat in Mostly Good to Fair Condition – US-DA

    Crop Progress and Condition for the Month of January 2014.

    Much of the state was hit with snow and ice during the month of January. Temperatures averaged 18.5 degrees, 6.2 degrees below normal. Precipitation was slightly above normal in the Northeast, East, and Central districts, but below normal in the Southern and Eastern districts. Statewide precipitation averaged 1.78 inches, 0.15 inches below normal.

    Topsoil moisture was rated at 4 percent very short, 20 percent short, 69 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated at 8 percent very short, 30 percent short, and 62 percent adequate. The temperatures have left the dormant winter wheat crop rated in mostly fair to good condition. Winter wheat conditions stand at 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 3 percent excellent.
